The website of Mir Hossein Mousavi, the candidate that many believe rightfully won the election, has stated that the Iranian government has arrested 70 university professors in its continued crackdown on the Iranian protestors.

Seventy university professors were detained in Iran in a widening government crackdown on protesters, according to a Web site affiliated with Iran's key opposition figure, Mir Hossein Mousavi, who says he was robbed of victory in a rigged presidential election.

Iranian state television's Channel Two is playing a Lord of the Rings marathon in an attempt to keep people inside watching hobbits and not protesting in the streets.

I wonder if there's a hidden, symbolic meaning to the Iranian government selecting that trilogy. Or, maybe the translation provided will provide one.

Iran Accuses U.N. of Meddling

After accusing western media and nations of fomenting protests in Iran, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has now charged U.N. leadership with meddling in the affairs of their election.

Via Voice of America:

Iran is accusing U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of meddling in its affairs after he urged the Islamic state to stop its crackdown on opposition protesters.

Iran's government also accused the U.N. chief of being influenced by unspecified foreign powers.

Mr. Ban released a statement Monday urging Iran's conservative government and reformist opposition to peacefully resolve their dispute over this month's election. Official results gave a landslide victory to the conservative incumbent, Mahmoud Ahamdinejad.

Iran Claims U.S. Interference in Elections

The New York Times reports that Iran is cracking down on journalists and has directly accused the United States of interfering in their presedential election.

The article goes on to report that:

President Obama said a day earlier that it would be counterproductive for the United States “to be seen as meddling.” But he has also said he was “deeply troubled by the violence” in Iran and that democratic values needed to be observed.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry officials, without being specific about which comments they were reacting to, expressed “protest and displeasure,” the news agency said.

Opposition leaders, meantime, called for more mass defiance.

There have been huge riots in Iran in the wake of the country's recent election. So far, hundreds of thousands of people have demonstrated against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election, and so far 1 has died during protest. There have been growing whispers of electoral fraud.

The Washington Post Reports:

CAIRO -- How do you count almost 40 million handwritten paper ballots in a matter of hours and declare a winner? That's a key question in Iran's disputed presidential election.

International polling experts and Iran analysts said the speed of the vote count, coupled with a lack of detailed election data normally released by officials, was fueling suspicion around President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's landslide victory.
